Explore beyond Marrakech on our day trip to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. While the drive is significant (around 3.5 hours each way), it’s a rewarding journey through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains separating the city from the desert’s edge.
Traverse winding mountain roads, pausing at scenic overlooks to capture panoramic views and see authentic Berber villages. The highlight is visiting the iconic Ait Ben Haddou. This UNESCO-listed ancient ksar (fortified village) is famous for its unique earthen architecture and as a filming location for many well-known movies.
Your day trip begins with an 8:30 am pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad by your driver. Setting off towards Ait Ben Haddou, the journey takes you across the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka pass, ascending to 2260 meters in the High Atlas Mountains.
Enjoy breathtaking views and glimpses of traditional Berber villages along the way, with opportunities for photo stops. We then reach the magnificent Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site designated in 1986. You’ll have time to explore this iconic fortified village, famous as a filming location for movies like Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.
After free time for lunch at a local restaurant, the excursion continues to Ouarzazate. Here, you’ll visit the renowned Atlas Film Studios, the largest in Morocco, and the historic Taourirt Kasbah, another significant heritage site.
Following the Ouarzazate visit, we begin the scenic return drive through the High Atlas Mountains back to Marrakech. Expect to arrive in the late afternoon, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, concluding your memorable day trip.
